Good Day to all;
If you received an email from Ernie or Rod about a "First Chapter Competition," it is for your information only. Ernie nor Rod do not endorse any contests save for those sanctioned by the FWA.
This competition has an address in the United Kingdom and our friend and fellow member, Peter McNally, took the time to do a little research. Here is a copy of his reply.
Hi, Earnest,
The computer is a wonderful device. I looked up where Fiction Factory resides. Take a look at their address and you will see they have a lot of dreams to write about ,they simply have devised a plan to make money. Copy and paste the google address below and see the Fiction Factory location. Not very impressive.
It might make them a few pennies but they're not professional.
Talk soon.
Regards,
Peter McNally
Thank you Peter. You're right, the business address does not appear as a professional office complex.
However;
Cottage industries are a staple of business in the world today. I applaud the entrepreneur who applies their talent and puts in the hard work to establish a business. The appearance of the headquarters does not necessarily denote a fraudulent or dishonest business plan. It is for each of us to make a decision as to if we will do business with any company offering a service. This is a case of buyer discretion. With the world of computer technology available today, a single desk may offer a plethora of opportunities.
The existence of an impressive office complex does not always mean the business inside is honest and above board. re: Bernie Madoff!
Entering writing competitions is a great way to build your writing resume (résumé, if you are a stickler for the formal methodology). But, with all due respect to the contest sponsors, take the time to verify the organization's credibility. The vetting process sometimes is difficult so, look at it this way: Am I willing to send my work out to an entity with whom I have no knowledge of their veracity?
And that's my two-cents worth.
Rod
